NCC participated in 42The International Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation (ISTS), which was held in Pattaya, Thailand, from 24 to 29 March 2024. The event was attended by over 500 people from about 60 different nations.
NCC collaborator Dr. Alan F. Rees presented a paper on “Tracking male turtles from Kyparissia Bay, the largest loggerhead rookery in the Mediterranean». The results presented at the Symposium are a subset of data from a larger multi-taxon survey conducted by NCC as part of the Ecological Baseline Study on the status of important fauna species in the marine area of Kyparissiakos Bay leased for hydrocarbon extraction. The study is undertaken on behalf of HELLENiQ UPSTREAM SA.
The telemetric tracking of adult male sea turtles from breeding areas is a largely understudied research topic, as most studies focus on the more easily accessible adult females that come ashore to breed at predictable times and locations.
The presentation was very well received with many researchers showing interest in the results, which further led to several conversations outside of the official presentation time about the research work being carried out by NCC and the importance of the findings resulting from such novel actions.
