NCC has begun a research collaboration with the University of St Andrews in Scotland, providing acoustic data for sperm whales, which have been collected over the past two years in the Greek Trench region and which will be used in a postgraduate thesis. This is an important collaboration that may contribute in the understanding of the specificities of the sperm whale population in the eastern mediterranean region. The St Andrews research team includes some of the top experts in the study of marine mammals worldwide. In the study participate two important coworkers of NCC, Dr. Popi Gikopoulou and Dr. Jonathan Gordon.

The topic of the master’s thesis is the identification of codas. Blowers (Physeter macrocephalus) live in long-lived social clades within matriarchal societies, which are phonetically distinguished by dialects of socially learned click series called codas. Dialectal differences in codas patterns have identified seven distinct cultural tribes inhabiting the Pacific Ocean. Studies have shown that “identity codas”, following a 3+1 click pattern, characterize the geographically and genetically isolated Mediterranean subpopulation. However, recent research suggests that this pattern may differ between Western and Eastern Mediterranean bellows populations. This Master’s research involves acoustic analysis of codas from bellows living in the Greek Trench, initially aiming to assess how closely they adhere to or deviate from the known 3+1 pattern. If this pattern differs, evidence of vocal specificity and cultural transmission would support regional diversity in this species. This, in turn, would benefit ongoing conservation efforts to promote nature and biodiversity and reduce human disturbance in important Mediterranean marine habitats.

NCC was recently accepted as a partner in the ACCOBAMS initiative and will contribute equipment and personnel to the implementation of the ASI 2026 Inventory, which will cover the entire Mediterranean area.

The collaboration with ACCOBAMS will be integrated into NCCs LIFE MareNatura program research, so that the records of the two programs are harmonized and yield the best possible results.

It is a pleasure and an honor for the NCC team to contribute to such an important initiative.

What is ACCOBAMS (from the ACCOBAMS website):

The Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area (ACCOBAMS) is a legal conservation tool based on cooperation. Its purpose is to reduce threats to cetaceans notably by improving current knowledge on these animals.

This intergovernmental Agreement provides the demonstration of the commitment of riparian Countries to preserve all species of cetaceans and their habitats within the geographical Agreement area by the enforcement of more stringent measures than those defined in the texts adopted previously.

ACCOBAMS results from consultations between Secretariats of four Conventions:

the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean and its Protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean,

the Bonn Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals,

the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats,

the Bucharest Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution.

Finally, given the migratory characteristics of these species, the Agreement was established under the auspices of the Bonn Convention (UNEP/CMS).

ACCOBAMS was signed on November 24th, 1996 and entered into force on June 1st, 2001.

On December 2 and 3, the telemetry team, consisting of researchers from the NCC and the Natural History Museum of Crete, successfully radio-tagged vultures at the acclimatization cage in Gergeri. Over 30 birds were safely trapped, allowing the specialized researchers to attach 28 GSM/GPS transmitters. The data will contribute to the systematic monitoring of vulture flights throughout Crete, with particular emphasis on the area around the new Heraklion airport. The collection of telemetry data will enable the analysis of flight paths, altitudes, and seasonal movements of birds, providing a complete picture of their behavior patterns. The project will contribute to the development of an effective Wildlife Hazard Management Plan for the safe operation of the new Heraklion airport.

In the framework of the LIFE MareNatura project, pelagic surveys for cetaceans, seabirds and sea turtles were carried out by sailing boat in the area north of the Sporades and south-southeast of Halkidiki, where the North Aegean Trench is located and the depths reach up to more than 1500 meters. The mission was carried out by the NCC team from 11 to 17 May 2024.

During the surveys, acoustic methods for cetacean monitoring (use of a sliding hydrophone with Distance sampling) and visual methods for monitoring cetaceans, seabirds and turtles (Distance sampling & ESAS protocol) were applied. With the application of these methods, bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, loggerhead turtles, artemisia, sea crows were observed, while the increased mobility of mychos towards Dardanelles was noteworthy.

NCC participated in the 42nd International Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation (ISTS), held in Pattaya, Thailand from 24 to 29 March 2024. The conference was attended by over 500 researchers from around 60 different nations.

NCC associate Dr. Alan F. Rees presented a paper on the topic “Monitoring male turtles from Cypress Bay, the largest hatchery for loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean Sea“. The results presented at the Symposium are a subset of data from a larger study being conducted by the NCC as part of the Ecological Baseline Study on the status of important fauna species in the marine area of the Cypress Gulf leased for hydrocarbon extraction. The study is carried out on behalf of HELLENiQ UPSTREAM S.A.

Telemetric monitoring of adult male sea turtles from breeding sites is a poorly studied research topic, as most studies focus on the more easily accessible adult females that come ashore to breed at predictable times and locations.

The presentation was warmly received with many researchers showing interest in the results, which led to several discussions outside the official presentation time about the research work carried out by the NCC and the importance of the findings resulting from such innovative activities.
