Monitoring and monitoring design projects

NCC undertakes monitoring programs for the recording and assessing of the conservation status of species and habitats. The consultancy plans and implements specialized scientific research programs that include intensive fieldwork, adapted to the specificity of each monitoring group, e.g. avifauna, invertebrates, reptiles, mammals, flora. NCC aims to collect and evaluate reliable scientific data that will help assess the conservation status and management requirements of the monitored species and habitats, reinforcing the management actions for the protected areas of the country.

Given below is a list of the most important categories of projects, where we have been involved:

Site Monitoring Plans, include the planning and pilot implementation of protected area scientific monitoring programmes. More specifically monitoring plans for Kerkini wetland in collaboration with WWF-Hellas and for 5 SPA sites on Cyprus in collaboration with the University of Athens have been produced. Monitoring activities in a number of Life project has enabled the use of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and techniques, including satellite, GPS and radio telemetry, in collaboration with the HOS.

Habitat mapping projects, refer to the provision of expertise, with the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) in association with databases in order to describe, evaluate and map sites and habitats for their biodiversity importance. This approach was applied for the identification and mapping of High Nature Value agricultural and forest lands in Greece, which was implemented in collaboration with the HOS and the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), for the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.
